Are You the Reason Your Team Isn’t Taking Ownership?

Many leaders want their teams to take greater ownership to make decisions, act with initiative and take responsibility for outcomes. Yet they may not recognise how their own behaviour can discourage the very ownership they are asking for.

Ownership develops when people have clear expectations and feel trusted to act. When that trust is missing, attention can shift from taking responsibility to avoiding mistakes and blame.

This can happen through everyday interactions. When leaders step in too early, people can step back. Similarly, questioning every decision can make people wait for the leader to decide instead, while consistently criticising deliverables can leave people focused on meeting minimum requirements rather than contributing their judgement and ideas. Over time, what a leader intends as support may be experienced as a lack of confidence in the team.

Ownership is a function of clarity and trust. In an AI era, clarity is becoming more volatile, making trust the differentiator. Ownership only shows up when people feel it’s safe to act, decide and take responsibility.

If you want more ownership, ask yourself: where am I getting in the way?
